INNER MELBOURNE VET CLUSTER

The Inner Melbourne VET Cluster is an association of secondary colleges, which was set up to enable the sharing of resources and ideas in the organisation of VET programs.

The cluster collaborates with employers, industry and TAFE colleges, to enable students from individual schools who would otherwise not be able to under take VET studies, to join a program.

Membership of this cluster, means that in addition to Certificates II in Broadcasting, Certificate II in Information Technology, Certificate II in Multimedia and Certificate II in Music Industry/ Technical Production, Swinburne students may also choose from the following VET programs:

• Certificate II in Concept Development for Clothing Products
• Certificate III in Community Services
• Certificate I in Engineering
• Certificate II in Fitness and Community Recreation
• Certificate II in Furnishings
• Certificate II in Horticulture

Certificate III in Multimedia

The first year of the Certificate III in Arts (Interactive Multimedia) is a pre-employment program primarily aimed at year 11 students. The program introduces students to the theory and practice related to the multimedia industry. It provides students with basic knowledge and skills in design concepts, layout and in the presentation of information using selected computer software.

The second year builds on the knowledge and skills gained in the first year and enables students to utilizes applications at a more sophisticated level. Students work on presenting information by designing web sites and interactive programs. Successful completion of modules will support students entering further studies with advanced standing for Certificate IV in Arts (Interactive Multimedia) along with other vocational and post-secondary educational pathways.


Certificate III in Music Industry

During the first year of this two-year course students gain an introduction to digital audio recording and process­ing, exploring the world of sound and acoustics. Using Cubase and Pro Tools, they compose, arrange, record and mix songs and produce music for film and advertising. Students gain a broad knowledge and understanding of the music industry, including publishing, record companies, contracts and occupational health and safety.

The second year of the course concen­trates on audio recording, mixing and mastering. Students undertake major recording projects and create a demo. They gain experience taking a variety of roles in the studio and deepen their knowledge of the music industry, sound and acoustics.

This course leads to Certificate IV in Music Industry (Technical Production) and from there to Associate Diploma, Diploma and Degree courses.


Certificate II in Broadcasting

This course aims to train students in radio production and provide an insight into the nature of the broadcasting industry in Australia. Working in conjunction with SYN FM radio based at RMIT, students prepare and present their own series of radio shows.

Students gain an understanding of the skills involved in making radio programs and work in groups to:- develop thematic ideas for radio programs, research and organise audio material, use a portable minidisk recorder, edit and manipulate sound on a computer and present information on air.

The course follows the requirements for community radio as set by the CBAA (Community Broadcasting Association of Australia) and provides an excellent foundation to further studies in any related areas of media/multimedia.

Certificate III in Information Technology

This course is a structured program that aims to provide young people with the opportunity to gain basic training in programming.

Future Pathways include

•Certificate IV in Information technology - (Choosing one of three special areas:

- Technical & Users Support
- Software Development
- Software Application)

• Diploma in Information Technology

• Degree in Information Technology
