Newsletter 5: TIS
Tertiary Information Service (TIS) for Year 12
Now that you’re half way through your Year 12 many of you are thinking about what you want to do next year. Some have scheduled an appointment with Pheona in careers (see below), and if you haven’t, get onto it! The new VTAC guides will be released on July 24 and applications open on August 3. Copies of the TAFE Guide are also available now. Pheona is here to help you with your application and everything relating to it!
To help with figuring out what you’re going to do next year you will be attending the Eastern TIS Event, which is a Tertiary Information Session. Instead of mentor on Thursday June 25 you’ll meet on the basketball courts and two buses will take you to Deakin University in Burwood. Bring your lunch with you, although you may have a chance to buy something at the Deakin cafe! The buses will leave Deakin University at 1pm and return to school in time for periods 5&6.
The Tertiary Information Service (TIS) provides you with an opportunity to explore a range of options for next year. You’ll be entertained by a theatre troupe and band of musicians, will participate in a Q&A session with University staff and students, then attend a shopping centre style expo manned by a variety of TAFE, University and ITC providers. ITC providers are Independent Tertiary Colleges. The Army will probably be there too.
Attending Eastern TIS will help with your VTAC and TAFE applications!
Managed Individual Pathways (MIPs) Appointments
Year 12 students are encouraged to make an appointment with Pheona to revise Year 11 MIPs plans and modify it depending on what you want to do next year – work, TAFE, Uni, etc. Simply write your name on the appointment schedule sheet outside the Careers office. Appointments can be made during periods 3&4 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Please note: Pheona will be away during the last week of term so appointments will be with Jackie Love instead.
Before your appointment think about your abilities, interests and experiences. What are your hopes and visions for the future? Consider ideas relating to work and study.
Remember: a choice made today is not a choice made forever. People are no longer locked into one occupation or education level.
Changes to TAFE fees
The Victorian Government has announced changes to TAFE education under the Jobs for Your Future: Skills for Victoria reforms, taking effect from July 1. Changes coincide with the Commonwealth government decision to allow TAFE students to access a loan scheme similar to the Higher Education FEE-HELP scheme (formally HECS). It is expected that the VET FEE-HELP scheme will allow students in some TAFE programs (including diplomas and advanced diplomas) to defer payment of fees. Fees for students enrolling from July 1 will vary according to the level of qualification in which they enrol. Courses will be offered at the following levels: foundation, skills creation (Cert I & II), apprenticeships and traineeships, skills building (Cert III & IV) and skills deepening (diplomas and advanced diplomas). It is expected that fees for skills building courses will be about $1,000pa in 2010 and about $2,000pa for skills deepening courses.
Changes to Centrelink for gap year students
Taking a gap year (year off between VCE and University) can be rewarding, leading to valuable life experiences, travel, personal growth and a year away from the stress of study. Previously, students who took a gap year and earned more than $20,000 were eligible for an independent rate of Austudy when they attended University – which is more money than Youth Allowance and allowed them to live with their parents and still receive financial support. The Federal government has proposed to close this loophole from the start of next year. Now you will have to work 30 hours per week for 18 months to qualify. You are only eligible for Youth Allowance if your parents earn below a certain middle-to-low income threshold (regardless of whether they share their money with you!).
A representative from Centrelink will discuss these issues amongst others with Year 12 students on October 15 at a year level assembly. For more information please visit http://www.centrelink.gov.au/internet/internet.nsf/individuals/st_index.htm
Proposed changes to Commonwealth Scholarships
The recent Federal budget has proposed changes to student income support and eligibility for Commonwealth Scholarships. The proposed changes will see new Commonwealth Scholarships administered by Centrelink from January 2010. The Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship (CECS) will be replaced with the Student Start-Up Scholarship. All university students receiving income support from Centrelink will be entitled to a Student Start-up Scholarship of $2,254. Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship (CAS) will be replaced with the Relocation Scholarship. University students receiving income support from Centrelink and who have to move away for study will be assessed by Centrelink and may be eligible to receive the Relocation Scholarship of $4,000 in first year and $1,000 in subsequent years. More information about the proposed changes can be found at http://www.deewr.gov.au/HigherEducation
The skills you need
Employers are interested in what they describe as “employability skills” when they decide who to employ and who to promote within their organisations. Employability skills are the skills that allow people to do their jobs well in all circumstances—they are not the technical skills required by an occupation. Employability skills and personal attributes are important no matter where people work or what they do.
Employability skills include:
- communication
- teamwork
- problem solving
- initiative and enterprise
- planning and organisation
- self-management
- learning
- technology
Think about which of these skills you currently possess and which you need to work on before entering the workforce. For example, if you need assistance with planning, organisation and self-management you may wish to speak with Anne in Study Support.
What if I don’t get a high enough ENTER?
Some of you are already worried about your ENTER score and where it will lead you. Don’t focus on the “what ifs” prematurely. Book an appointment with Pheona and develop a range of options for next year. There are many alternatives including TAFE to University pathway programs and gap year activities.
One option is to study a diploma at the Melbourne Institute of Business and Technology (MIBT). Upon successful completion, you may be eligible for a place in second year of a Deakin University degree program (conditions apply). There are courses in commerce, computing, engineering, health sciences, management, media and communication and science. MIBT is located at the Deakin University campuses in Burwood and Geelong (at Waurn Ponds). For more information visit http://www.mibt.vic.edu.au
Monash University offers a similar option at Monash College with courses in art & design, arts, business, engineering and IT. Visit http://www.monash.edu.au/monashcollege
Pathways between TAFE and University are also available at RMIT and Swinburne. Visit http://rmit.edu.au/browse/Study%20at%20RMIT%2FPathways/ and http://www.future.swinburne.edu.au/pathways/index.html
Some students explore gap year options with the Australian Defence Force. The application process has changed and improved so it is not a ‘first-in-first-served’ selection model. Applications are open now and close on September 3. Check out http://www.defencejobs.gov.au/gapyear
If you don’t get an offer at the beginning of the year you can try again mid-year.
VCE not for you?
Students may not complete their VCE for a variety of reasons. For those who are thinking about leaving school it is important to see Pheona in careers. Referrals can be made to KYM, ieLLEN or another appropriate organisation to help you through the transition away from school. Information about adult VCE, TAFE, apprenticeships, ITCs and short course providers is available. There are options! KYM will be unable to take new referrals between October 31 and January 1 so it’s important to get in early.
Are you worth more than your Year 12 results?
The Early Achievers Program at Australian Catholic University recognises that you have more to offer than your ENTER. The Early Achievers Program is open to all applicants and considers the contribution you have made to your community through your school or workplace, local community organisations, culture, sport and/or religious group. Apply for this program and you could be accepted into ACU National by December – before the VTAC offers. Online applications open in July and close on October 9. For more information please visit http://www.acu.edu.au/earlyachievers

Mobil Aviation Flying Scholarships
Applications are now being sought from young Australians aged between 17 and 25 for three flying training scholarships offered jointly by the RAAF Association and the Royal Victorian Aero Club. The scholarship program is now in its 11 year. Applications close July 31 and further information is available at http://www.flyingtraining.com.au

Doxa Cadetship Program 2010
Doxa Youth Foundation provides essential support and services to young people that our community has left behind. Their program focuses on long term outcomes for young people and their families. For the past 17 years the Doxa Cadetship Program has provided financial assistance to school leavers looking to commence tertiary studies while gaining work experience at a company relevant to their degree. The Cadetship Program is for disadvantaged young people who, although eligible for a university place, are disadvantaged to the extent that they would find it extremely difficult to take up their university offer.
All Year 12 students who hold Australian citizenship and are socially and financially disadvantaged and would like to receive more information about this program need to visit Pheona in the Careers Centre.

Administrative Update
Round 3 VTAC offers will no longer exist in 2010. This is to assist TAFE and ITCs who start courses earlier in the year. The Australasian Conference of Tertiary Admissions Centres (ACTAC), of which the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) is a member, has agreed that all states and territories (except Queensland) will use the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), during 2009 and 2010. This is a name change only. There is no change to the calculation and it will have no effect on students’ ranking or the selection process.
TAFE/University Key Dates and Open Days
Open Days are one of the best ways to check out what the TAFE or University you are interested in attending has to offer. It is important that you visit institutions where you may wish to study. Some courses like art, design, music, drama and related courses can involve an audition, interview and/or folio presentation as part of the selection process, so attendance at Open Days is vital. During an interview you may be asked what you learned about the course at Open Day – a difficult question to answer if you didn’t attend.
Many Open Day dates have already been announced – put them in your diary and treat them as a priority.
