WHAT’s HAPPENING IN THE CAREERS OFFICE?

New face in Careers

Hi, my name is Pheona Donohoe and I am the new Careers/Pathways Advisor at SSSC.  I also work in the Humanities department.  Thanks to Meredith Reeve and Liz Trembath for the great work they did in Careers in 2008 and the help they offered last years students with their VTAC applications.  And congratulations to everyone who received a Round 1 or 2 offer.  Round 3 offers are released on Tuesday February 17, and remember there are always other options for those who don’t get an offer such as mid-year enrolments, TAFE courses and courses at Monash College or MIBT.

All students should be aware that they are welcome to make an appointment to see me in the Careers office located in the library.  I am available on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday during periods 3&4.  I am available to discuss anything from casual job searching, applications, resume writing and interview preparedness through to VET, VCAL, apprenticeship training, applications for TAFE, university and private training courses, deferment, subject selection, using the VTAC guide, work experience and gap year activities.  Please come and introduce yourself to me.  I’m here to help!  Simply schedule your appointment by visiting me in the Careers office, using the Appointment Schedule sheets outside of the Careers office, calling me on 8862 4411, or emailing me via donohoe.pheona.m@edumail.vic.gov.au.

A considerable amount of information about Careers will also be distributed during Thursday morning mentor sessions and/or posted on the Careers noticeboards such as any relevant information about jobs, apprenticeships, training courses, assistance for students etc.

MIPs (Managed Individual Pathways)

Term 1 is a great opportunity for all Year 11, VCAL and VET students to begin their Managed Individual Pathways plan, or MIPs.  MIPS aims to provide you with a framework for setting goals for your VCE studies and to plan towards possible options for further study, training or employment in the future.  Initial questionnaires will be distributed and completed during English classes and will be followed up with a one-on-one interview.  Follow up interviews will also be held with Year 12 students during Term 2.  Please schedule your appointment by visiting me in the Careers office, using the Appointment Schedule sheets outside of the Careers office, calling me on 8862 4411, or emailing me via donohoe.pheona.m@edumail.vic.gov.au.  It is very important that you keep the interview times made.

The Age on Monday

The Age newspaper includes an Education section each Monday.  This used to be a stand-alone supplement but will be incorporated in the main news section of the paper this year.  These pages will continue to provide in-depth reporting on the big issues, together with incisive comment and practical advice for students, parents and teachers.  But what appears in print will now be augmented by expanded coverage online at www.theage.com.au/education.

The VCE resource material, an invaluable aid to senior students, will be available online -- everything from Maths Masters, to Text Talk and a wide-ranging science articles.  Research articles will look at what's going on inside Australia's finest institutions, while the Course Road Test will profile tertiary courses to help light the way for prospective students.  Issues in the News will analyse all sides of a topic taken from the headlines.

Scholarships

Are you interested in applying for a Commonwealth Scholarship?  If so, come and collect a brochure from the Careers office that outlines the range of scholarships you may be eligible for.  Information is also available from www.goingtouni.gov.au.

Students with disabilities

The Careers office has information regarding post school options for young people with a disability.  If this applies to you please come and collect some pamphlets.

Other

If you are interested in becoming a pilot please collect A Guide to Aptitude Testing for Joining The ADF from the careers office.
