New face in Careers

Hi, my name is Pheona Donohoe and I am the new Careers/Pathways Advisor at SSSC.  See newsletter number 1 for more information.

Post-school options

Managed Individual Pathways (MIPs) Appointments

By now all Year 11 students should have completed the MIPs questionnaire.  Please schedule an appointment to discuss your MIPs plan.

Post-Secondary Study Options for Year 12 students

If you are in Year 12, no doubt you have begun to think about what you’ll be doing in 2010: study, work, travel, etc.  For those wanting to study, your choices include Universities, Technical And Further Education (TAFE) Institutes and Independent Tertiary Colleges (ITC).
You need to determine the most suitable option; you can get assistance in this process by attending Open Days (mainly in August), going to seminars, reading course information online and outside the Careers office, talking to friends/relatives and by meeting with Pheona in by scheduling an appointment using the appointment sheets outside the Careers office in the library.

  • There are several Universities in Victoria offering degrees: Australian Catholic University, Ballarat, Charles Sturt (a NSW uni with a campus at Albury-Wodonga), Deakin, La Trobe, Melbourne, Monash, Swinburne, RMIT and Victoria.  Undergraduate University degree courses are subsidised by the government with Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP), except for international students who pay full fees.
  • TAFE’s are located throughout Victoria.  Some TAFE’s are linked with a university (eg, RMIT, Swinburne and Victoria) while others stand-alone (eg, Box Hill, Chisholm, and Kangan Batman).  TAFE’s offer pre-apprenticeships, certificates, diplomas and sometimes degrees.  Most TAFE places are also subsidised, however TAFE fees are under review.
  • There are also many specialist ITC’s such as Australian College of Natural Medicine, Australian College of Sports Therapy and Photographic Imaging College, offering certificates, diplomas and degrees.  ITC’s require the payment of full course fees.  There are government loan arrangements available for many fee-paying courses

NOTE: If you have a CSP you will be required to pay a portion of the fees; this payment, however, can be deferred until you are earning about $40,000pa (currently) and re-paid through the tax system.  To find out about payment for courses, and a lot of other information, visit

http://www.goingtouni.gov.au.

Some advice in choosing a course

  • Make sure that you have the pre-requisite subjects for the course.
  • Don’t choose a course just because it has a high ENTER; you need to enjoy and be suited to the course.
  • Don’t choose a course because someone else thinks it’s what you should do – it’s your life!
  • Take time in making your decisions.
  • Consider applying for a course and then taking a year off from study to work/volunteer/travel, particularly if you are very unsure (ie defer your offer of a place).
  • Go to Open Days (August) to check out the institutions you are considering.
  • Don’t assume that you will be able to transfer to a preferred course after first year – check what is required for this to happen.

Tell me more about the TAFE option

TAFE is Technical and Further Education, offering certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas, and a number of degrees and apprenticeships/pre-apprenticeships.  Courses are vocationally based, leading to employment or further education.  Requirements for entry are generally less demanding than university.  Some advantages of studying at TAFE are small classes, usually low cost, courses are generally quite short, there’s a broad range of programs, and TAFE institutes are geographically accessible in most areas.
Courses cover a huge range of options from animal care, building, business, childcare, conservation, design, engineering, event management, fashion, horticulture, hospitality, IT, music, nursing, tourism, trades, visual merchandising and youth work to name a few.
For more information about courses flick through the TAFE Directory outside the Careers office, call the TAFE Course Line on 13 18 23 or visit

http://www.tafe.vic.gov.au.

Host families needed for July 2009

Southern Cross Cultural Exchange, an Australian not-for-profit  organisation specialising in international student exchange programs, is seeking volunteer host families for high school students scheduled to arrive in Australia in July 2009 from Germany, Italy, France, Holland, Austria, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Denmark Finland, Japan, Brazil, Canada and the USA.  Host families can choose from students staying for a range of either 3, 5 or 10 months and they all attend local high schools whilst they are in Australia.  The main purpose of cultural exchange is to challenge youth towards international understanding and tolerance, encourage further learning, self-knowledge and awareness - invaluable characteristics in today's world.  SCCE organise all the flights, school enrolment, transportation, insurances and support systems.  Just imagine having a brother or sister for a few months from another country.  It’s a great opportunity for Australian students to learn that there is a world of variety and opportunity waiting for them – different languages, foods, sports, customs, and perhaps an overseas visit to look forward to later on.  For more information please visit http://www.scce.com.au

TAFE/University Key Dates and Open Days

Open Days are one of the best ways to check out what the TAFE or University you are interested in attending has to offer.  It is important that you visit institutions where you may wish to study.  Some courses like art, design, music, drama and related courses can involve an audition, interview and/or folio presentation as part of the selection process, so attendance at Open Days is vital.  During an interview you may be asked what you learned about the course at Open Day – a difficult question to answer if you didn’t attend.
Many Open Day dates have already been announced – put them in your diary and treat them as a priority.
